Working for the Community

The Parish Council is responsible for providing a number of local services to the people of the village, such as the burial grounds, footpaths and open spaces, bus queue shelters and litter bins. The council also works the District and County Councils and other public and commercial service providers to try to ensure that the services they provide are appropriate for local needs.

Deeping St James Parish Council has submitted a bid for £35,500.00 to WREN - Waste Recycling Environmental Ltd. for a Multi Activity Ball Area to be installed on the popular skate park site in Linchfield Road. This is the third phase of their project at the “Woody Heights” site, and the second attempt to ask WREN for funding. The local WREN panel recommended funding be approved at their meeting in June, but when it went forward nationally, the Board cut £650,000 off the recommended awards. It was a huge disappointment, but with encouragement from WREN to re-submit the bid, and the youngsters at The Deepings School raising funds of £280 towards our project by having a non- uniform day, we know have our fingers crossed for a positive result when the awards are announced in September 2009.

Sketch scheme of Manor Way square redevelopment

A major project currently in hand is the improvement of the landscaping and the footpath layout of the open space between Hereward Way and the Manor Way shops to make it more attractive both to pass through and to spend time. This is being undertaken in partnership with SKDC as landowners and should enhance the setting of the shops, the school and the church which surround the square.

Some years ago CCTV surveillance was installed at the Manor Way shops, a road safety campaign emphasised the need for local drivers to set an example and drive within the 30mph limit in the village. For the Millennium we completed the restoration of The Cross, our historic village centre market cross, and planted the Millennium Wood in Spalding Road.

a bus shelter

Queue shelters have now been provided at ten bus stops in the village, making bus travel a more attractive option for many of our parishioners. Bus route and timetable information is provided on this website and on WAP for mobile phones to make bus travel easier: see www.dsjpc.org.uk/buses! Bus stop markers and information boards have been provided at many stops where shelters are inappropriate. In partnership with our County Council we are beginning to provide raised kerbs at bus stops to make it easier for the elderly and infirm to use buses, or those with child buggies or shopping trolleys.

The Woody Heights skatepark has been open at the Jubilee Field in Linchfield Road for a couple of years, and improvements have been made to address the noise and safety issues which have arisen, and landscaping has been undertaken to improve the general appearance of the playing field. Recently a new Youth Shelter has been installed at this park, with the cost of decoration met by Deeping St James United Charities.

Following demands from parishioners Allotment Gardens have been provided in Hall Meadow Road and have been a great success. A mains water supply has recently been connected to enhance the enjoyment of this amenity.

Public information on other pages of this web site are also part of our work for those who live in Deeping St James, and a printed quarterly newsletter is now published, bringing information to all the households in the parish.

In conjunction with the County Council we have provided a limited form of traffic calming at danger points on the village's roads, and our "30 mph in Deeping St James" stickers are available for the rear window of your car.
